The Island

I’m happy to announce that The Island has been re-released, with an awesome new cover thanks to the incredibly talented Natasha Snow.

Initially, when I got the rights back after my contact with Loose Id expired, I thought about making some changes to the story. It’s interesting to see that what I wrote back in 2012 isn’t what I might write today. There were a few places where, in hindsight, I might have made a different decision with the plot. Ultimately though, I decided to leave it pretty much untouched except for some tiny tweaks I doubt anyone will notice.

Really, at this point, I think I’ve got enough plot bunnies to keep me busy until the next millennium, so I don’t feel the need to start reworking my older stories.

Here’s the blurb, for anyone who didn’t catch the book the first time around:

Shaw is in Fiji to sell a stolen painting to the crime boss, Vornis. It will be the deal of a lifetime, if Shaw can pull it off. But then Vornis parades his latest toy around in front of him—a captured DEA agent whose time is running out. It’s none of Shaw’s business, and it doesn’t matter that under any other circumstances Lee would be exactly Shaw’s type: he’s young, he’s hot, and he might even have a personality if they hadn’t beaten it out of him. One Perfect Night - Available May 3

One Perfect Night is a short story (about 9000 words) set in Townsville, Australia, in 1943. 

In 1943, with the Japanese advancing through the Pacific, Townsville was on the front line. In 1942, the population of Townsville went from an estimated 30 000 people, to somewhere between 90 000 to 100 000. Schools were closed, and handed over to the Americans to use, as were businesses, cinemas, hotels and as many as 200 private homes. In one street alone, thirty houses were commandeered by the Americans to use as a hospital.  Slit trenches were dug in the main streets, and air raid shelters built. The airport, still in use today (and the only one remaining in Australia that is joint use between the civilian airlines and the RAAF), was built because of the war. 

Townsville is my home city now, I guess. I mean, there comes a point when you have to admit that if you haven't moved in over a decade, this could be it. When I was a kid, I moved a lot, thanks to my dad's job. One of the places we lived was Bougainville, an island in Papua New Guinea. The war was still evident there, in rusted-out tanks on the side of the road, in roads and bridges built by the military, and, on a jungle hillside, a large red cross marking where Yamamoto's plane was shot down. It was impossible to grow up on Bougainville and not be aware of the war, even if it seemed as strange and mystical to a kid as the tales of the spirits in the volcanos. 

It was in Bougainville that I first learned about the coastwatchers. The coastwatchers were men stationed on islands throughout the Pacific - planters and traders mostly - who, when the Japanese came, spied on their positions and reported back to the Allied Intelligence Bureau, based in Townsville. They were only a small group of men, but their impact on the Allied war effort can't be understated. They were the eyes of the Allies, behind enemy lines, and helped turn the tide of the war against Japan.

FALLOUT - Cover Reveal

You guys know M Caspian, right? You read Kraken, right? 

Well, guess what? M and I wrote a book. It's called FALLOUT, and it's coming on April 17. 

Here is the awesome cover, designed by the brilliant Natasha Snow: 

High-school boyfriends Jack Haldane and Bastian Wade thought everything would be perfect once they reunited at college, putting disapproving parents and small-town attitudes firmly in the past. I'm so excited! Mark Cooper versus America is out on January 28, and JA Rock and I have a cover to show you:

Is it wrong that the thing I'm most proud about in this book is the fact that we get to use the word "arse" instead of "ass"? Because ass, as we all know, is the incorrect word. Right, JA? 

Anyway, Mark Cooper versus America is a really fun book. We had heaps of fun writing it, and I hope you'll have heaps of fun reading it. I think Mark is one of my favourite characters, and not just because he says "arse", but because he's fun, he's fearless, and he's stubborn. That stubbornness isn't always a good thing, or a smart thing, but he's also eighteen, and who didn't do some dumb things at eighteen? 

With that in mind, here's one of my favourite Aussie songs:

December 17, you guys! Mark your calendars! (Mine's still on June, but you might be more organised than I am.) 

I always like getting covers. They're like Christmas presents. They're like that odd sense of anticipation you got as a kid, when you knew what you wanted but you were afraid to get your hopes up in case it was underwear again. But then it turned out it was a bike, just like you asked for! 

And no, I'm not just making that analogy because The Boy Who Belonged is a Christmas story. 

Okay, fine, I am. You got me. 

Also, it's starting to feel a lot like Christmas, right? I say that as an Australian, since we don't celebrate Halloween much, and don't have a Thanksgiving at all, so there are no pesky holidays I need to get out of the way first. No, Christmas is the next cab off the rank for me.

And as much as I dislike the fact that the Christmas displays are already in the shops, it really is starting to feel like that time of the year. By which I mean, of course, the following: 

1. It's getting hot. 

2. The mangoes are almost ripe. 

3. The rain has come. 

I've heard about these white Christmases though. One of these days I'm going to get me one of those.

Cover Reveal for The Good Boy!

I love it when I get to do this. Seriously, this is the fun part! This is the part where a thing that was just a file on my computer suddenly becomes a real book. And here it is, the cover for The Good Boy! 

The cover artist is Fiona Jayde, and I think she's done a great job here. And the words are by me and JA Rock!

Omigosh, you guys! The cover for Dark Space is out. It was designed by Mina Carter, and it is awesome: 

I am totally in love with Brady. I mean, the rest of the cover is great, but seriously, they could have replaced Cam with a fuzzy pink bunny and the space station with a Wagon Wheel and I wouldn't have noticed. Can't. Look. Away. From. Brady.
